Instructions Not Included (Spanish: No se aceptan devoluciones, lit. ‘Returns not accepted’) is a 2013 Mexican comedy-drama film directed, co-written, co-produced by, and starring Eugenio Derbez. The plot follows a Mexican playboy who is suddenly saddled with a love child at his doorstep, and sets off to Los Angeles to find the mother. Released in the United States on August 30, 2013, the film received mixed reviews and grossed $100 million worldwide.
Valentín Bravo had always been a rather fearful child, afraid of everything from heights to spiders. His father, Juan «Johnny» Bravo, raised him trying to make him fearless by making a tarantula walk on Valentin and throwing him off a high oceanside cliff known as La Quebrada. Valentín grows up to be Acapulco’s local playboy and sleeps with every tourist that crosses his path. One day a former fling named Julie shows up at his doorstep with a baby girl, Maggie, claiming that she is his daughter. Julie leaves the baby with Valentín after asking him for cab fare, but she doesn’t come back.
Valentín leaves Acapulco with Maggie and hitchhikes across Mexico and into the United States. Going only by a single photo of Julie in which a Los Angeles hotel is visible in the background, Valentín visits the hotel to track down Julie. However, when Maggie wanders to a nearby pool, Valentín ends up jumping out of the presidential suite into the pool ten stories below, rescuing his daughter. A movie director witnesses this event and hires Valentín as a stuntman — a job which Valentín accepts since he believes it is the only way he can support Maggie.
An unlikely father figure, Valentín raises Maggie for six years, giving her a happy, fun, and carefree home. Meanwhile, he also establishes himself as one of Hollywood’s top stuntmen to pay the bills, with Maggie acting as his on-set translator as Valentín still doesn’t know any English. Meanwhile, during a visit to the doctor in which he receives an injection, the doctor confides in Valentín — with Maggie out of earshot — that the treatments aren’t working.
To hide from Maggie the fact that her mother abandoned her, Valentín writes weekly letters to Maggie from her, detailing various adventures and feats around the world to explain her absence. Eventually, Valentín gets a call from Julie saying that she is in Los Angeles and wants to meet. Julie, who now lives in New York City, tries to be a part of Maggie’s life again. After a tearful departure at the airport, Julie realizes she doesn’t want to just see Maggie during visits and holidays. She files for custody and cites Valentín’s dangerous job and lack of English skills as reasons that he is unfit to raise Maggie. Valentín’s sincerity convince the judge that he has Maggie’s best interest at heart, and he awards custody to Valentin as he is the only parent she has really known. Not backing down, Julie asks for a DNA test which proves Valentín isn’t the father after all. Valentín ends up losing legal custody of Maggie, but they sneak away and decide to go back to Acapulco where he reunites with his friends, although he discovers that his father died a few years ago.
Julie threatens Valentín’s director into revealing Valentín’s location, who repeatedly claims he doesn’t know where the father and daughter are. Eventually he relents and states that Valentín has woken up every day not knowing if it would be the last day he would see his daughter, but the details are not revealed on-screen. Julie finds Valentín and Maggie on the beach and has surprisingly dropped her attempts to gain custody. Instead, the three enjoy time together as a family in Acapulco while in a voice-over Valentín narrates how doctors can sometimes discover a heart defect for which there is no cure and which could kill the patient any time. As Valentín and Julie sit on the beach with Maggie falling asleep in Valentín’s lap, Maggie peacefully passes away, which reveals that she, not Valentín, was the one with the heart defect.
One year later, Valentín is seen walking down the beach, with a dog but without Julie. Valentin now understands his father’s motives in wanting to give him the courage to face his fears by preparing him to meet them, and expresses gratitude to Maggie for teaching him to face life without being ready. The film ends with a vision of Maggie playing in heaven with her grandfather, while Valentin concludes that even in their absence, his father and daughter continue to teach him how to face life.

Instructions Not Included grossed $7.8 million from 347 theaters in its opening weekend in the United States,[3] making it the fifth highest-grossing film of the 2013 Labor Day weekend.[4] The film «shattered box office records» and became the «highest-grossing Spanish-language film to open in North America,» and by the second weekend the number of theaters showing the film doubled. By the end of its run, it grossed $44.5 million in North America, making it the highest-grossing Spanish-language film and the fourth highest-grossing foreign film all time in United States, along with grossing a total of $100.5 million worldwide.[2]
In Mexico, the film has a record-breaking $11.52 million from 2,755 screens on its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing opening for a Mexican film of all time, doubling the record set by El Crimen del Padre Amaro of $5.5 million. In the second week it got around $9.4 million to retrieve the first place, accumulating around $27 million and making itself the highest-grossing Mexican film of all time by breaking the records of 2013 film Nosotros los Nobles of $26.3 million.[citation needed]
At the end of 2013, Instructions Not Included ended with a sum of $46.1 million, consolidating as the third highest-grossing movie of the year in Mexico, just below Despicable Me 2 and Iron Man 3.[5]
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 57% based on 21 reviews, and an average rating of 6/10.[6] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 55 out of 100, based on 5 critics, indicating «mixed or average reviews».[7] Audiences polled by CinemaScore that gave the film a rare «A+» grade.[3][8]
Joe Leydon of Variety described Instructions Not Included as «sporadically amusing but unduly protracted.» He also wrote: «Derbez and Peralta develop a sweetly effective chemistry in their scenes together … Unfortunately, the supporting players are all too often encouraged to overplay, with decidedly mixed results.»[1]

In 2016, a French remake of the film titled Two Is a Family (Demain Tout Commence) was released.[10] The film was directed by Hugo Gélin and stars Omar Sy in the role originally played by Derbez. In the same year, a Turkish remake of the film titled You are my everything (Sen Benim HerŞeyimsin) was released. The film was directed by Tolga Örnek and stars Tolga Çevik in the role originally played by Derbez.
A Brazilian remake directed by André Moraes, titled No Returns Accepted (Não Se Aceitam Devoluções), was released on May 31, 2018. The movie stars Leandro Hassum as the lead character. A Philippine remake directed by Crisanto B. Aquino, titled Instant Daddy released on October 11, 2023. The movie stars Ryza Cenon, Althea Ruedas, and Jerald Napoles.[11] Spanish remake Sin instrucciones was released on 25 December 2024.[12]

An easy Oscar contender.
I was going to be politically correct and leave 8 out of 10 stars for this but then again could not think of the flaws that would justify the missing 2 stars so I threw in another. The last one is always reserved for technicalities, photography, sound, music, etc. An excellent example of how a simple movie can be so powerful. What could be more important than a parent/child relationship? I specially felt the plot as a father who was separated from an only child at a very early age. Great performance by Eugenio Derbez (Valentin), Jessica Lindsey (Julie) and Loreto Peralta (Maggie). I can’t remember the last time I cracked up so much not having enough time to discreetly wipe my tears. That look in Julie’s face when she encounters Maggie is worth seeing this alone; a moment which can not be easily replicated. Highly recommended.
Totally worth it!!!
I’ll be honest, I was dragged in to see this movie but was quickly enthused and charmed by the undeniable chemistry between father and daughter(Eugenio Derbez, Loreta Peralta). The very first minutes weren’t exactly my cup of tea but it it gets to the point eagerly and you get the whole message of the title along with it. Don’t confuse it for just another meager Disney squall of becoming a family film. No where throughout the movie did I remember the pacifier or the Game Plan those were particularly distasteful movies I could hope to forget. Instructions Not Included finds heart and answers many questions all of us have asked about life. All the troubles and dismay we go through are for not, the very essence of where we have placed our hopes lie within the children we take care of and honestly there aren’t any instructions included through the sobs, the laughs, and the peace we come to while they teach us how to grow.
Watch this movie and I promise you won’t forget it and bring a box of Kleenex for your tears.
On how to confront life, how to enjoy life and how to deal with lost but all these through a roller-coaster of laughs, tears and other feelings in between.
After watching «Instructions not included» I can say it is a very good movie. It’s not the classic Hollywood comedy. Yes, you will have to read the subtitles sometimes and certainly it is not the classical familiar comedy. Nevertheless it is a very good movie. Forget «Fish out of water father» films, that part is only a fraction in this one nor is the Kramer vs Kramer type although has its part. The film tackles on how to confront life, how to enjoy life and how to deal with lost but all these through a roller-coaster of laughs, tears and other feelings in between. If you are bilingual (English & Spanish speaker), this is a must. This film will be remembered for years to come as the one that broke the inertia of Mexican cinema and probably will sign a new kind of films to come. Go watch it.
An Unexepected Gem
My boyfriend and I went to see this with my father last night. It was not at all what I expected and as the movie progressed, I was continually surprised. What a lovely movie. Not just a comedy, but a truly heart-warming story. The little girl’s acting performance is Oscar worthy. Seriously, where did they find her? My boyfriend usually hates movies with sub-titles, but this one made it worth the trouble for him. If you speak Spanish, like me, then you will get more of the cultural references, but you don’t need to understand Spanish to get this movie. Fear is universal and so are lessons in courage, and this movie really spoke to that. Make sure to take your hankie. Watch, watch, watch this movie!!!

First I have to say it is not your typical Hollywood Movie, it isn’t Adam Sandler Big Daddy either, its a Mexican comedy with a touch of drama, the great thing about this movie is how well Eugenio puts it together, its fast paced, great acting, nice cast, with good shots and a fine score, it takes you on an emotional ride, you laugh and then you almost cry, then you laugh again, don’t worry about subtitles its very easy to follow, the box office down here in Mexico has been spectacular, we had 900,000 viewers Saturday 21st of September, I hope this movie to be the beginning of great crossover films, my brother said «you cant miss it», I agree

По началу кажется, что это шлак, типа нашего «скорый москва россия» но постепенно понимаешь, что это не так! Не смотря на то, что ситуации в фильме банальные, и кажутся легко предсказуемыми… Те, кто досмотрит фильм до конца, будет вознаграждён сполна! Один из тех редких случаев, когда концовку предугадать практически невозможно! За сценарий просто пять, за исполнение, конечно, троечка. В результате — твёрдая четвёрка! Фильм вызывает эмоции, а это в наше время не маловажно. Спасибо.

Отец старался воспитать в Валентине отвагу и умение справляться с жизненными неурядицами, но слегка перестарался. Из-за его экстремальных методов сын начисто передумал взрослеть, становиться ответственным и начал избегать любой ситуации, которая могла вызвать дискомфорт. И все было прекрасно: девушки, пляж, безмятежная жизнь, как вдруг на пороге квартиры возникает одна из подружек с маленьким ребенком. Подружка стремительно исчезает, оставив ему маленькую Мэгги, а Валентин, обдумав ситуацию, решает вернуть ей ребенка, для чего отправляется в США.
Сюрпризов от жанра «Как у мужчины возникают отцовские чувства» ждать не приходится. Конечно, папа полюбит ребенка, будет его воспитывать, конечно, мама будет желать вернуть ребенка, конечно, будет суд и семейные встречи. Все это в фильме имеется.
Однако авторы постарались добавить в классическое блюдо хоть немного приправ, так что местами очень смешно, местами очень трогательно и есть немного неожиданные для накатанного сюжета повороты. И хотя фильм занудно проповедует семейные ценности и любовь, он все-таки отличается от штампированных семейных мелодрам. В том числе финалом. За что ему присуждается 4 звезды.
Редкое кино, способное пробудить редкие эмоции, на протяжении всего сюжета говорящее с юмором о непростом, и создающее ощущение, что ты смотришь комедию, до самого конца, пока не случится то, чего ты никак не ожидал.
Думал что фильм комедия , я в конце я сидел и плакал почти , реально. Прям так пробрало. Давно такого не видел — сходите, хорошее кино !
Завязка фильма проста, но дальше карты разыграны по другому. Повороты сюжета непредсказуемы. Мы смеялись и плакали. Действительно стоящий фильм. О самом главном.

Самая худшая трагидрамма из всех. Поэтому расскажу этот дикий сюжет,чтобы вы не тратили свое время. Короче инфантильный гедонист живет в свое удовольствие,но тут ему подкидывают ребенка выдавая за его дочь, в итоге он становится супер правильным отцом. К 7 году жизни девочки возвращается ее блудная мать с новостью, что она ее любит,но стала лесбиянкой, после чего вместо того чтобы договориться пытается отсудить дочь у отца, ей отказывают. А потом бинго! Она заставляет сделать его тест на отцовство и вуаля…Кукушонок то не его…Короче дальше хуже. Кукушонок с оленем,т.е. с отцом, нелегально мигрируют в Мексику,послечего мама их настигает и типа вселенская у всех любовь-морковь наступает вдруг и тут девочка погибает… Сказке конец. Кроме того ужасные актеры и игра.

“Инструкции не прилагаются” (No se Aceptan Devoluciones, 2013) — Смех да слезы по-мексикански
Стоит смотреть, если:
— Вы хотите посмотреть семейное кино
— Мужчины с детьми умиляют вас не меньше, чем милые котики
— Вам нравятся жанровые метаморфозы и неожиданные сюжетные повороты
14 августа в прокат вышла мексиканская лента “Инструкции не прилагаются”. По сюжету ловелас Валентин из Акапулько, специализирующийся на одиноких туристках, в одно прекрасное утро становится отцом — одна из его многочисленных бывших заявляется к нему на порог, вручает ему 7-месячное дитя со словами “Это твоя дочь” и бесследно исчезает.
Экспозиция главного героя навязчиво напоминает первые минуты из “50 первых поцелуев” с Адамом Сэндлером, только вот прическа у главного героя похуже, ну и говорят все по-испански. К моменту завязки начинает попахивать весьма средненькой комедией о мужчине внезапно ставшим отцом с вытекающими шутками про подгузники, бессонные ночи и отсутствием секса.
Довольно неторопливо сюжетная линия начинает обволакиваться не свойственным для комедийного жанра драматизмом. Тут уже начинаешь терять почву под ногами, не до конца понимая, с чем же имеешь дело. К кульминации частота драматических поворотов сюжета достигает уровня латино-американских сериалов. Комедия уходит на второй план, и наступает самое время доставать носовые платки. После убойного финала думаешь, что где-то тебя обманули, а потом утирая сопливый нос, понимаешь, что теперь все встает на свои места.
Визуальная картинка вышла очень симпатичная, сказочно-детская и по-мексикански яркая и солнечная. Отдельно порадовали анимационные вставки. Юмор, напротив, подкачал — слишком тут много голливудских клише и не в лучшем исполнении.
Режиссер и исполнитель главной роли Эухенио Дербес жанровым инструкциям точно не следует. Перевоплощения из комедии в мелодраму, а из мелодрамы в трагическую драму происходят хоть и неожиданно для зрителя, но весьма органично. То смеешься, то плачешь, а то и все вместе — прямо как в жизни.
Удивительный фильм, который начинается как дешевая комедия, а заканчивается как невероятно-тонкая и трагическая история. Когда я читала описание фильма, то показалось что это легкое кино наподобие «Плана игры» с Дуэйном Джонсоном» где ему всучивают на время дочь, которую он не ждет, но потом не может с ней расстаться. И вначале действие похоже, НО сюжет в итоге оказывается намного сложнее, а изменения которым подвергается главный герой и жертвы, на которые он идет ради своей дочери, оказываются намного значимее. Это кино о детях и родителях, о том, что дети имевшие плохих родителей, могут перебороть свои страхи и стать великолепными родителями. А еще это кино о маленькой девочке, которой очень повезло с отцом!
Очень хороший , добрый фильм! После которого остаешься под впечатлением! Чем то даже 1+1 напоминает хотя они совершенно разные. Концовка тронула! не только голливуд может снимать хорошие фильмы. Может конечно затянут. но все равно это 5ка!!
Сложность с гениальными фильмами состоит в том, что к ним очень сложно написать адекватно отражающую содержание фильма рецензию. В по-настоящему хороших кинопроизведениях есть особая магия, волшебная искра которую зрителю дарят только талантливые режиссеры, и как ни старайся — на бумаге, тем более в формате короткой заметки, эту магию конечно не воспроизведешь.
Я не буду пересказывать сюжетную завязку «Инструкции не прилагаются» — её легко найти в интернете и там же есть вполне сносный трейлер. Я напишу про то что эта завязка не имеет с фильмом ничего общего. Мы с супругой пошли на легкую семейную комедьку, а попали на фильм уровня «Форреста Гампа». Как и в «Гампе», в этом фильме много легкого, остроумного и не пошлого юмора, но как и в «Гампе», юмор — это не основа сюжета, а история рассказанная режиссером не заканчивается с финальными титрами.
Мне очень сложно писать о подробностях фильма, не раскрывая его идеи и я не советую никому пытаться о ней узнать. Лучше придите на просмотр с открытым сердцем — не пожалеете. В нем поднимаются очень глубокие и философские темы, но полностью отсутствует мелодрама и традиционные для драмы слезливые моменты. Судя по не самым благоприятным рецензиям на этот фильм, многие критики этого контраста не оценили и поставили в вину режиссеру то что он не рассказывает о настолько серьезных вещах с серьезным же и нравоучительным видом. Но лично я не люблю ханжей, клише и лицемеров, а этот фильм полностью свободен от них и, на мой взгляд, намного честнее, искреннее и глубже рассказывает о том что делает нас настоящими людьми чем почти все, что когда либо было сказано по этой теме.
Небанальный и непредсказуемый сюжет, начинающейся с банальной завязки и немедленно уходящий с её рельсов и держащий в напряжении весь фильм. Добрый юмор. Прекрасная, а местами и гениальная игра актеров. Достаточно неплохая визуальная составляющая. Объединяющая весь фильм хорошая и светлая идея. И, конечно, та самая магия которая превращает просто хорошее кино в золотой шедевр мирового кинематографа.
Сходите на сеанс или посмотрите это кино дома. Не пожалеете.

Потрясающий фильм. Очень рекомендуем. Правда, если у вас не очень с нервами — не рискуйте. Пронзительный фильм.
Прекрасный фильм, трогающий до глубины души. Понравилось в нем все без исключения- от начала до самого конца. Советую сходить, не пожалейте своего времени.
