Activity:

Building a LEGO EV3: In class we were instructed to build LEGO EV3 robot using the riley rover instructions which were placed on SEQTA.

Purpose of activity:

The purpose of this activity was to learn and understand how EV3 robots are built. While reading the instructions that there are several different ways to create the robot, plus that there are several different accessories and sensors you can add on. The different accessories involve: ultra-sonic sensor, colour sensor, touch sensor, Gyro sensor and claw like arms that are able to pick up and carry objects.

Ultra-Sonic Sensor

EV3 Ultrasonic sensor is designed to produce invisible sound waves and then read their echoes in order to detect and measure distance from objects in front and around the robot. Ultrasonic sensors can be helpful in educating students as “Students could design a traffic-monitoring system and measure distances between vehicles, for instance. There is an opportunity to discover how the technology is used in everyday items like automatic doors, cars and manufacturing systems” (Sensor, 2016).

Colour sensor

The colour sensor is able to detect up to eight different colours and measures light intensity. Colour sensors can be used to make the robot follow a line or stay inside a marked area for example. Schools are able to purchase the colour sensor to encourage “Students can build color sorting and line-following robots, experiment with light reflection of different colors, and gain experience with a technology that is widely used in industries like recycling, agriculture and packaging.” (LEGO Shop, 2016).

Gyro sensor

The Gyro sensor is able to measure the EV3’s rotational motion and then changes the robots orientation.  For learning purposes the robot and Gyro sensor teaches students about measuring “angles, create balancing robots and explore the technology that powers a variety of real-world tools like Segway®, navigation systems and game controllers” (LEGO Shop, 2016).

Touch sensor

The touch sensor is able to respond to a touch and recognizes the difference between the button being: touched, bumped and released, the sensor can also count the amount of time the button is pressed. Touch sensors can be helpful if program does not want sequence or routine to start until the touch sensor is pressed. Using the touch sensor “Students can build start/stop control systems, create maze-solving robots and uncover the technology’s use in devices such as digital musical instruments, computer keyboards and kitchen appliances” (LEGO Shop, 2016).

Learning:

“LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 makes building, programming and commanding your own LEGO robots smarter, faster, and more fun than ever. Follow the simple steps below and before you know it, you’ll be in control of robots that drive, shoot, slither, walk, slam, and spin – to name just a few of the actions that come with this awesome robotics set” (Lego.com, 2016).

From this activity I learnt about different sensors and that they need to be plugged into the correct ports to function correctly. I personally always thought that building robots would require a lot of skill and brains; I didn’t know that building a robot can be done by Lego, and that it would be so simple to create and assemble the robot.

By creating the robot and discovering more about it, I learnt that EV3 robots can be used for education purposes as well as entertainment purposes. EV3 can be used to teach students of all ages about robots, sensors and more. Because the robot is made out of Lego pieces, majority of children would find assembling the robot lots of fun at the same time as learning about the different sensors and how they need to plugged into correct ports to function correctly.

For this activity we had to assemble the robot, we hadn’t learnt about the technology used to program to EV3 yet.

Self-evaluation comment:

I achieved the task; I build the EV3 robot following the riley rover instructions and did not have much trouble. Overall I found the task quite simple and enjoyable. I originally thought the activity would take longer than two lessons, however I found it simple and finished building the robot within two lessons. Looking around the classroom it seemed to me that other students were enjoying the activity as well and weren’t finding it extremely difficult. It wasn’t the first time that the EV3 robots had been assembled, therefore parts of the robots were scattered all over the place; this was extremely annoying as it required you to go looking through all the boxes for the part you needed. Missing parts were found in the end, however every person assembling a robot had this problem. Overall though, I enjoyed assembling the EV3 robots, I had fun and learnt about the robots at the same time.
